ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

For the last two years Paul Hann has been offering an artist-in-residence program to Elementary Schools.  The program generally occurs in a five-day time frame, Monday to Friday. However, the length and content of the program is usually dependent upon the size of the school and Mr. Hann will cater to the individual needs of each school.

Mr. Hann works together with individual classes in writing a song, practicing and performing it. The completed work is presented in a school concert.  An outline of the program involves the following:

1.  A week or two before the program begins Mr. Hann is given the topic for each group (chosen by the staff and students).  Topics are varied and ranged from issues of social responsibility to subjects the students are currently studying. Mr. Hann composes a chorus for each song as a way to present the program, engage students, and give direction to facilitate the songwriting.

2. Sessions are half an hour, followed by a ten minute turn around to set up for the next class.

3. The first day is a brainstorming session.  Ideas for the content of songs come directly from the students and all are noted.  These ideas are used throughout the entire program. During the next three sessions the verses are written with Mr. Hann guiding the students who formulate the different lines from the ideas already gathered.

4.  Friday’s dress rehearsal creates an opportunity to the entire student body to hear the work of each class. The final concert for parents and family is generally presented in the evening. Concerts include each class performing their original song and one other song that they learned together during the week.

The artist-in residence program has proven to be very successful.  Students work together as a team in a positive, creative and organized fashion.  They collaborate in creating their own song and prepare for a concert.  It is a fun, uplifting experience as students share their work with family, teachers and friends.

It should be noted that the above schedule is a guideline and programs vary from school to school.  Some schools have chosen to produce a CD of the student’s work.
